Description

She mounted the hunter’s horse she had ridden bareback and which now had a Nomad’s saddle and stirrups decorated with golden wire. Her eyes flamed against the blue head scarf as she looked for the last time on Konad, who watched her silently, from the distance of his race. She leaned forward and put her hand on his shoulder.

“Good-bye, Yaddo,” came the clear voice. “Remember the prophecy I gave to you at Tshiksaan. The sands are coming. May Amkala hold you near.”

He lifted his hand and slipped something into her fingers. It was the braid clasp with the falcon of Shiz that she had used for her conjuring trick weeks before.

She could not look at him any longer and nudged her horse forward to join the wagons. She did not turn back, nor did she put his gift into her travelling bag, but rode for many hours through the darkness, carrying the silver bird in her hand.
